OWC IMac mod FYI
Tracey Wallin: [7:56:23 PM] Welcome to our real-time support chat. How can I help you today?
craig alan: [7:56:23 PM] Does OWC TurnKey Upgrade Program for Apple iMac 27 – eSATA void apple care warranty?
Tracey Wallin: [7:56:39 PM] Nothing being performed during this service voids your Apple warranty entirely, however we cannot guarantee Apple will not void all or part of your warranty as the circumstance and reasoning will vary. That is why the upgrade work being performed, and the product installed, are warranted for 1 year by OWC. Additionally, all still-installed, original components will be warranted for up to 1 year by OWC, depending upon how much time is left on your original Apple warranty.
[7:57:19 PM] For the extended Apple Care warranty, while we cannot guarantee Apple will not void your warranty, the upgrades performed do not usually result in a voided warranty so you can choose to keep your Extended Warranty. Apple does have a provision allowing you to cancel the warranty within 30 days less the costs of any repairs and potentially a $25 fee dependent upon the laws in your state of residence. Please see your warranty for full details.
craig alan: [7:59:05 PM] You’re saying OWC will warranty the entire Imac for one year if the upgrade is done and Apple voids the warranty?
Tracey Wallin: [7:59:49 PM] Up to one year, depending on how much time is left of the original Apple warranty, yes.
craig alan: [8:01:04 PM] So the only remaining question is whether Apple will void the 3 year warranty.
Tracey Wallin: [8:01:50 PM] I know that we are offering an extended 3 year warranty as well, let me find out if that runs concurrent. One moment please.
[8:06:19 PM] As well with the 3 year Apple Warranty – if you purchase an extended 3 year warranty with OWC, and with Apple both, and if Apple deems it void due to the upgrade, OWC will cover the all still-installed, original components for the remaining life of the Apple warranty.
craig alan: [8:07:28 PM] How does OWC extended warranty work? Can I still use local apple repair shops to get work done under the warranty?
Tracey Wallin: [8:10:06 PM] For any warranty work, not associated to the upgrade, yes, you can go to the local Apple repair facility. If Apple states that they “void” the repair due to the upgrade, OWC will cover the repairs for you – only if the extended warranties are concurrent. And, I would recommend that if they do accept/make warranty repairs after the upgrade, that you inform the Apple Tech beforehand to let them know you have had an upgrade to the machine, to avoid them from pulling out these upgraded parts.
[8:10:40 PM] Not that they will….but we want to avoid this from happening.
craig alan: [8:11:36 PM] Is it required to get both the apple care warranty and the OWC warranty or can we just buy OWC warranty? How much is the 3 year warranty?
Tracey Wallin: [8:11:49 PM] It would be required to have both.
[8:12:25 PM] The 3 year OWC extended warranty is $169.00
[8:12:52 PM] Standard fulfillment through the original term of one year is no charge.
craig alan: [8:14:20 PM] Can we buy the OWC warranty after it is determined whether apple will void the warranty with the upgrade? Also is possible for the end user to remove the upgrade before taking the Imac in for repairs. I’ve done that with 3rd party ram at apple store request.
Tracey Wallin: [8:16:44 PM] Without the Apple 3 year warranty, OWC’s 3 year will only cover the labor/installation/parts of what we installed during the upgrade. So both, would need to be concurrent. If by removing these components, it will void the warranty in its entirety, so that is not recommended. Apple repair should not remove what you now own, but it was just a precautionary suggestion.
craig alan: [8:20:12 PM] I see . so the $169 is a 3 yr warranty for the upgrade but OWC will cover the entire Imac if Apple voids the applecare 3 yr warranty.
Tracey Wallin: [8:21:08 PM] Correct.
craig alan: [8:21:49 PM] Does OWC sell Imacs? It would be great to have the upgrade done without having to ship back and forth.
Tracey Wallin: [8:22:01 PM] I believe that we would need the Apple 3 year warranty number/serial number for confirmation. We don’t sell IMacs!
[8:22:13 PM] You can have Apple drop ship the order to OWC, if needed.
craig alan: [8:23:05 PM] So if I order from apple they can ship direct to OWC.
Tracey Wallin: [8:25:15 PM] Absolutely. What you would need to do is place the order with OWC for the upgrade to obtain an order number. Place the order with Apple for the IMac, and request that Apple ship to OWC; with your new OWC order number in an ATTN TO: line on the shipping address. OWC would ship back to you. You can select the return shipment type/cost when placing the new order with us.
[8:26:08 PM] After placing the order with us, process: One of the two specifically trained reps or a supervisor will contact the customer to confirm the order, confirm they have read and understand the warranty information, confirm they understand their card is being charged and confirm they have their original box and packaging material for sending the unit it and understand the shipping options chosen and estimated receipt date.
craig alan: [8:27:01 PM] This upgrade is only available on the 27″ models? Any of the 27″ models/options?
