Overlapping and Erasing Footage
Posted by Wesley Kelemen on August 27, 2016 at 2:04 pmA very frustrating problem I’ve come across in PP is I’m bringing in footage or moving stuff around and because you maybe not always see the timeline you might accidentally overlap clips. And what does PP do it erases the clip underneath. On this project alone it’s happen 3 times and once I noticed it right before export.
But the real problem is now I have to go replace the clip. Is there anyway to make PP more like FCPX I guess where there none of this overlap & erase?
Im not mad at PP I’m disappointed

August 27, 2016 at 2:29 pmPremiere Pro does not have a magnetic timeline like FCPX. When you move clips around on the timeline you are in an overwrite mode by default. Pretty much every NLE works this way, except FCPX. An alternative solution would be to copy the clip and use the past insert command. Then your clips will be inserted where you want and push the other clips down on the timeline without overwriting.

Just hold the modifier key (Ctrl) on PC when moving clips around.

August 27, 2016 at 8:13 pmActually PPro does have a magnetic timeline that you can turn on and off (hint, it’s the button that looks like a magnet). Another alternative is to just undo the clip placement and do it again.

That’s simply snapping. It doesn’t work the same way as FCPX’s magnetic timeline.

I’m not sure how this nondestructive overlapping works, but does it behave like the magic timeline in FCPX? -

August 28, 2016 at 4:17 pmIf you push two clips together it will create a transition automatically. If remove a clip the extent of the other clip is maintained, as opposed to Ppro’s behavior of leaving a gap.

August 28, 2016 at 4:20 pmOK thanks.
That seems to be quite far from how the FCPX’s magnetic timeline works. -

August 28, 2016 at 4:49 pmWell Magnetic overall specifically is a unique feature of FCPX.
But gaps left by lifting clips was one thing specifically in the thread topic….
And this is similar to that behavior in FCPX…
probably as close as you’re gonna get.
