Good to know, I use a GH4 as well, among other cams. Canon G10 and G30’s progressive stuff has been fine.

“just the stub downloader, maybe this is to prevent bootlegging?”

That is the usual reason. Very irritating.

Usually there is a tmp file stored somewhere and then deleted, but you need to be running some utility which monitors the installation process.

Anyway this doesn’t really matter because I am sure Vegas checks online for a valid license, periodically if not every time it runs. MSP11 used to do that; I found that out when I gave an old PC with it to my son. He started up MSP and terminated my license 🙂 I sorted it out eventually over the MSP online chat support facility.

Normally I would never use a program which does this, because such a program will one day stop running because the validation server has been terminated. I had that happen with a $20,000 FPGA design package some years ago. Adobe got a massive hassle with CS2 and CS3 when they killed their validation servers for these versions (basically this prevented the app being transferred to a new PC after the previous one packed up) so they put a serial number for CS2 on their website for the whole world to use 😉

But we don’t have a choice. I am sure all video editor vendors do this now.

    Nice one George! Thanks.

I took the opportunity to reinstall and register “again” the NewBlue titler, it had crashed and failed to register previously. An update was available, 160824 goes to 160926, so I installed it.

Dropped it in and no crash! Guess I’ll have to learn how to use it now, LOL.

I upgraded to the pro suite, and I’m really glad I got Boris Continuum Complete (the chroma key plugins are such a vast improvement over Vegas’ built in ones) and some other plugins I’ve yet to try out. I’m lucky I haven’t dealt with any bugs yet. Though having the icons in black and white makes NO sense and feels like something out of an early 1990s computer program.

As I understand it, Magix bought several applications from Sony. I figure they were trying to get V14 out fast so as to not lose anymore Vegas fans to other applications. But they probably set the release time too soon given the work and testing that needed to be done.

I’ve been a Vegas user since V2, and as an editor, I have patience (as we all do). So after only a couple of weeks since release, I’m not sweating things. After all, Magix didn’t spend all this money to screw things up. So sit tight for now and I’m sure the bugs will be fixed and the new features that we requested will show up.

    And there’s the rub, Steve.

With Vegas (no matter who owns it), it’s always the “next release.”

“Yep, next release, they’ll get it right.” It amazes me how many keep holding on to that fantasy.

How many years has that been the Vegas mantra?

As for me, I’m done with Vegas and am moving on to Edius (AWESOME NLE, by the way!).

No more “next release” charades for me.

    Hi Ron,

Good luck with Edius! Indeed, it is an awesome editor.
But it’s a different priced product.
Sure is, when I started up as a videographer, that time I considered more options.
Edius would have cost the double I paid for Vegas pro, and it is an editor only. Vegas covered my complete workflow from importing media, editing, and dvd authoring.
I don’t know how the prices compare today, but I stick with Vegas until I can.
If I ever leave it, it will be something for which is not tied to windows (nor mac).

    Best regards

    Laszlo:

Vegas covered my complete workflow from importing media, editing, and dvd authoring.

I don’t know what version of Edius you used, but in the latest (8.22) Edius does all the above, and then some: importing media, 4k, editing, dvd authoring. Done!

I’m glad I made the switch. I simply didn’t have any more patience to play the “next release” Vegas game.

Oh, and as far as price for Edius, I found it here on BH Photo for $474, cheaper than Vegas’ $599.
