“Over recording” w Edit to Tape

check the mastering settings of your edit to tape window.

the lower right side shows a checkbox with seconds you can fill in.

I usually always leave it at 10 seconds though.
You never know when or if a glitch might occur when it finishes and having that trail off prevents that.

I realize with high end decks that very rarely if ever occurs, but its a nice safety precaution imo.

Are you sure that it’s after the end of your sequence? You don’t, perchance, have an end-pop, or some other stray frame of media hanging out there?

Yes, I am sure there is no stray frames, etc. (shift-z & when I’ve output – I’ve indicated IN and OUT marks for the sequence. The most egregious and obvious outcome of this OVERRECORDING occurs when I am insert editing amongst existing footage…and I “burn” into video and audio that is already on the tape.
ie. In point on the Master Tape is 1:00:00:00 and I have a sequence that is 20 seconds long (and there is existing material at 1:00:22:00), Well, when I make the insert edit I am expecting it to go to 1:00:20:00…but it is going to 1:00:25:00…exactly 5:00 seconds longer than I want.
This never happened with my G5 (non-Intel Mac…all the rest of the “rig” is the same).

That did it. The MASTER SETTINGS on the lower right (as you said)…someone must have changed that here…I don’t usually use MASTERING. I use EDITING.
GREAT! Now back to frame accurate editing.
Your idea of adding 10 seconds to the end so there’s a “clean out” is a good idea. I often times use slug at the tail of the sequence.

I always have to check if its on editing or mastering because you never know when someone is going to change it and not put it back.

I almost over wrote some footage on a tape doing that.
