Outputting to client monitoring in FCP X.. not yet
Hello,
I’ve used a Matrox MXO with FCP for many years outputting to a second monitor and a client monitor… worked great. I thought I’d be able to buy a MXO2 and still be able to output with FCP X, BUT in looking at the ins and outs in combination with my Late 2009 Imac, it doesn’t look to be possible…. AND my old MXO is not supported by the latest Matrox beta x.3.
Any other solutions out there for outputting a signal to a second display? Expanding the canvas on a second monitor using FCP X is junk.
Currently the plan is to wait for the next generation of Macs and Imacs and decide at that point, but who knows when that will be and I have clients coming over….

There really aren’t any viable solutions.

The Matrox drivers are definitely not a viable option at the moment. I have a MXO2 Mini and while it works, sorta, and can feed a HDMI Monitor as well as a CRT, it is defiantly beta and wouldn’t be usable with a client. However, I’ve heard much better reports from the Blackmagic and AJA broadcast drivers. But everything is still in beta, both FCP X broadcast monitoring as well as the drivers. BTW, you can pick up an Intensity Pro for about $200.
Also, several months back I setup a workable client monitor setup. This might be helpful for your, or might not:

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions… Looks like I have sent myself down a FCP X dead end with going with a Late 2009 iMac. Doesn’t look like the Intensity Pro plays with an iMac.
I’d love to hear any other options out there…

Yes, I use the original MXO with my late 2009 Imac when editing in FCP 7. I have a mini display to DVI adapter on the imac so the MXO can send my image to a 23″ apple display and a 40 ” plasma (via component). I shoot mostly 720 and it looks great on both displays even with the component signal running to the plasma.
The MXO does mirror the second monitor in FCP X, but to fill the frame on the second monitor FCP expands the image to 150% and so is totally soft.

The original MXO is a very cool box. It sounds like your issue is that of the resolution setting for the MOX display. Couldn’t you just change it to 720p?
