I often have color accuracy issues with my AE renders and have finally convinced the powers that be to grant me use of one of the extra production monitors around here. The question now is: What’s the most cost-effective way to output a signal to a production monitor while retaining color fidelity? Would a cheapo video card with S-video out do the trick, or should I step it up a bit? The goal is to keep the cost around $300 or less (and it would be ideal if I could get the same thing for two computers, but that’s not completely necessary).

    Thanks for your help.

“Cheapo” and color accuracy generally don’t go together. S-Video is certainly better than composite, but nothing beats Component or SDI for true color accuracy.

Are you running Mac or PC? On the Mac, if you’re trying to use this on two machines, I would recommend either the AJA Io LA or the Io LD depending on whether your monitor has SDI or Component inputs.

Both are about $1,000 but they will give you full broadcast quality output to your monitors and it’s an external box so you can move it to whichever machine requires the output.

Aja good. Blackmagic’s Decklink cards can also do the job, and will also show both AE output and ColorFinesse output at broadcast quality. And they are a little cheaper.

Thanks for the response. I’m working on PCs here, though; do you know of any decent cards for them or a place where I could look?

AJA.com AJA also makes a line of cards for the PC called the Xena.

Blackmagic cards also work on PC. To see if there are any issues, check the Blackmagic COW.
