output. cannot see entire movie.
so i just edited a small film. i exported it and burned it to a DVD using iDVD. however, when i play it on a normal DVD player on my television, the entire film does not show up. it is cut off on the sides. how do i correct this? my titles are cut off as well as some of the footage. I am using a Sony HCR-HD3 camera. not sure if i imported or exported incorrectly. thanks.

The stuff you are losing is out of what is called TV SAFE. Every TV loses a bit of information around all the edges, because of the plastic that overlaps the TV tube to hold it into place.
In your Canvas, just above it there is a BOX, click on it and you will see a drop down menu. Select SHOW OVERLAYS then select TV SAFE. You will see two boxes appear. The outer one is the TV safe area…stuff that falls within that is what you know will be seen on all TVs. The next box is the TITLE SAFE box. All your Titles should fall within that area for best viewing.

ok i understand that. however, i play the movie on my mac and it looks fine. nothing is cut off. it is only when i put it on a normal DVD player that it comes out cut off. shouldn’t it be 16×9? i have even played it on a widescreen TV and it has the same problem…

I’m sorry we can’t see your TV set from here. What do you mean by cut off? Cut in half maybe? Vertically? Horizontally? Black bands left and right? Top and bottom? Safe action cutoff? What are you talking about? Yes, there will be safe action cutoff when displayed on a television set.

what i mean is that both sides are cut off. it looks like the video should be widescreen but it does not show up that way on the TV. instead it looks like a normal 4:3 video rather than a 16:9.

Then possibly your DVD player is set to show widescreen material in pan and scan mode, basically the middle 4:3 portion of widescreen image.
Which version of iDVD is this? Are the project preferences set to widescreen? Do you mean an HDR-HC3, the Sony HDV camera? And I assume you shot in HDV format and captured using HDV presets and sequences. Is that correct?

iDVD version 6.0.2. I am pretty sure it is set to widescreen, how would I double check that? Also, as far as capturing the footage…I shot in HDV. Capture presets are set to HDV. Anything else I should change for that? It is weird because the DVD plays perfect on the Mac DVD Player. Appreciate the help.
I have played the DVD on two different DVD players besides my Mac. Not sure how I would check for “pan and scan mode.”

In iDVD open the project. Look under Project>Properties.
Pan and scan can be set on your DVD player.

so i am still unable to solve this issue. one thing that might help…when i open a file that i have captured in say Quicktime, the file is enormous. i can only see about 1/3 of the clip; have to reduce the clip to half size to see the whole thing. what does this mean? my capture options must be off??

I used to have the same problem. It’s because you are burning the DVD in a HDV resolution. On any computer or a HDTV it will probably works fine, but on a standard TV (NTSC or PAL) you won’t be able to see the entire footage…try scale down your editing (you can create another sequence and drag your editing sequence in this new sequence) using the NTSC safe box. Now export your video (I use compressor “DVD 90min” preset) and burn on iDVD…
