Output 1920 x 1080 30p HD to DVD questions
Posted by Dave Petteruto on October 10, 2011 at 6:04 pmHello,
I have some vacation footage shot on a Sony Bloggie video camera. The video is 1920 x 1080 30p and it shows up on the computer as mpeg4. I want to edit and put about 20-30 minutes onto a DVD. What is the best way to do this using Vegas 10? I’ve heard a DVD only holds about 25 minutes of HD so I’m not sure how to go about this. Quality isn’t super crucial, but I would like to do the best possible under the above guidelines. I have not worked with HD before so any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

What do you intend to play this DVD back on? A DVD player? If so, you can’t put HD on it. If you want to create a AVCHD Blu-ray disc on DVD media you can do that but that’s silly. Just buy a Blu-ray burner and make a real Blu-ray disc. Either way you will need a Blu-ray player to watch it.

October 10, 2011 at 6:39 pmHi John,
Thanks for your response. My problem is that I need to give a DVD to some elderly family members that don’t have Bluray players (and probably never will). So I need to know how to get it onto DVD and keep the quality as best as possible even if it’s not HD.
Thanks

OK, that wasn’t clear from your post.
You want to render the video using MainConcept MPEG2 with the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream template and then render your audio separately as Dolby Digital AC3 Pro using the Stereo DVD template. Then author your DVD in DVD Architect. If you give the video and audio files the same name, DVD Architect will know that they go together.

October 10, 2011 at 7:15 pmIt sounds like everything is the same as doing SD widescreen. Can I edit using the 1920 x 1080 30p HD Vegas project properties or should I use SD widescreen project properties? If possible I’d like to use the 1920 x 1080 30p HD Vegas project properties so I can also output an HD version onto Bluray for myself.
Thanks

Exactly. A DVD is always SD.

Yes, this is what I would do. Edit in HD and then you can deliver both HD and SD as needed.

October 11, 2011 at 10:33 pmOne more question if you don’t mind. As I mentioned above this is my first go-around with HD video so please be patient :). For Bluray burning if I use the 1920 x 1080 30p HD Vegas project properties to build my project it looks like I want to use the HD 1080 60i setup for rendering? Is the workflow similar to SD in that I make an AC3 file and a MainConcept mpeg2?
I tried the above and when I bring my AC3 and mpg2 into DVDA (set up as Bluray 29.970 interlaced, AC3 stereo audio format) I get a thumbnail from each file. Each thumbnail seems to have video and audio attached when previewed in DVDA but not when previewed outside of DVDA. Instead of having one thumbnail (after bringing in the AC3 and video file) I have two. When I do this with SD video I only have one thumbnail. I hope I explaned this correctly. Thanks

Yea, Blu-ray doesn’t support 30p so you need to use 60i.

Yes, exactly the same just with a different video template. You can use the same AC3 file for both.

It sounds like you may have dropped both onto your menu. You only need to drop one and the other will follow. (i.e., just drop the video file and it will have audio by default)

That was it John–I thought I needed to to drop both, but not so.
Thanks so much for your help John, it is very much appreciated.

October 12, 2011 at 1:48 amJohn–Well I thought that was my last question 🙂
Can you please tell me how much video run time do you get on a 25gb Bluray disc and what are the preferred brands to use?
Thanks
