    On different AE layers or on different mask layers?

    Yeah, on different mask layers but on one solid. But it have to be 1 mask layer instead of more.

    Note that AE’s definitions of masks and layers are very specific.

    A mask can only be one shape, either closed or open. A letter A, for example is two shapes: the silhouette and the hole. That would be two masks. AE works that way.

    You can have any number of masks applied to a layer in After Effects. To copy them from Adobe Illustrator, select and copy (within AI), then select a layer in AE and paste. But if they consist of more than one shape, you’ll end up with more than one mask.
