Out of RAM? What do I do?!?
I’m in AE 6.0, 720×486 size comp that’s 3 seconds long.
I have a solid layer that I apply a render filter to (for example, lightening).
The comp window is reduced to 50% and the RAM preview quality is set to Half. I try to RAM preview it but only the first 4 frames are played repeatedly, like that’s the farthest it can preview.
Is it safe to say I’m out of memory? If so, WHAT DO I DO?!?!

Is your work area set to longer than 4 frames?
Do you purge RAM (edit>purge image caches) regularly?Steve

Yes, my work area is set to the length of my comp (3 seconds).
To be honest, I have never actually used the Purge option before…I’ll assume that was stupid of me and that’s my problem.
I have used this program a lot in the past and rendered out many many things, and during the editing process used the RAM preview religiously, and there never seemed to be a problem until now.
Should I use the Purge Image caches/ Video memory (or maybe even Purge All) everytime I start something new in After Effects?
And by me “Purging All”, does that free up all the memory that is available to AE (in essence wiping out everything that was once stored in my AE memory)?

I purge every time the green bar (frames in RAM) disappears in the timeline which happens after I make a big enough change to the project and before I make a new RAM preview. If the green bar is there, and it will form the bulk of the preview that I’m going to make, I don’t purge unless RAM is low.
AFAIK, purging all purges everything in that purge menu. However, to really clean things up, I’ve found that you need to quit and relaunch AE occasionally.

I pppurged ‘n pppppurged this evening (when ram failed to hold enough) and finally saved and closed AF. Once I opened the program again ram was cool.
