  • OT – what’s the right way to connect miniDV cam for capturing ?

Posted by Ace Billet on June 16, 2005 at 4:19 pm

I have only one free firewire port that I use for both the FW to PAL (DAC) box and miniDV for capturing
(not at the same time of course).

Usually when I change the connection when the computer is on I get a Kernel Panic and have to restart.
Plus i’m a little worried for the safety of the connected devices, especially the camera.

What’s the right way (or order) to connect a camera to the computer for capturing ?
Do I have to turn off the computer ? Camera ? Both ?
Plus – does this Kernel Panic thing happen to anyone else ?
I had it before on the G4, also when I plugged in the DAC ..

    cheers

    FireWire is fully “hot-plug” compatible.

I’d suggest that if you have problems with any software that you’re running when you want to change the FW connection, that you first QUIT the software that is using the FW device before you break the connection.

Then make your FW gear change, and start any software you want to use with it.

Eject (unmount) the drive before you power down and pull the cable.

[Gunner Jones] “Eject (unmount) the drive before you power down and pull the cable.”

He’s asking about a DV capture card / camcorder, not a FW HD.
