  • OT: What do we call those pre-movie thingies?

Continuing the OT discussion below about bumpers (and what about interstitials?), what is the official term for those animated thingies we see before a movie starts? You see them at the end of most telelvision shows also.

TriStar has the galloping winged horse. Dreamworks has the little kid fishing from the crescent moon. Warner Brothers has a gold logo with their lot reflected the surface. Paramount has the old gal rising from the sea. WorldWide Pants, Bad Hat Harry, &c.

    Brand identity?

Studios call them their logos. That’s it. Nothing fancy.

Really? That’s more than a logo, you couldn’t print the Unicorn jumping over a triangle on the back of a jacket in motion (unless you have that lcd cloth material). Studio identity might be more appropriate, no?

    Company bumpers, perhaps?

I have digibetas of some from the studios themselves. I’m in L.A. – studios are where most of our business comes from. The labels on the tapes call them logos. Everywhere I’ve worked, they call them logos.

I also have an entire instruction sheet given to me from when Columbia/Tristar Home Ent. officially changed their name to Sony Pictures Home Ent. It has all kinds of rules about when and where you can use their new SPHE “logo”.

Sean’s right. We just worked with Fox on Die Hard, it’s a “logo”.

That’s it, then. Thanks for the conversation and the enlightenment.

    “Logo.”

Talk about inappropriately constructed jargon and the resulting endless confusion.
