June 30, 2007 at 8:13 pmI got one – just went to see how long the line was in Nashville and it was moving so fast I said why not? Took a total of 15 minutes to get in line and walk out with the phone.
Well I have fixed feelings about it. I never had email on my phone and that is the main reason for getting it. That seems to be working really well, I cannot believe there is no bcc – I would like to send a bcc to an account set up just for sent iPhone emails without anyone getting a hold of it. (reply all kind of problem)
The biggest disappoint is the Map directions but that is because I use Verizon’s navigation which is almost as good as a true GPS. And I use this thing all the time – cost me an extra $10 a month.
the Edge network is really slow for surfing. Bluetooth works great. I thought it had iChat built in but it doesn’t, my misunderstanding. The text program looks like iChat the messages staying in one file and in bubbles.
It was easy to set up and I transfered my Verizon number and that will take 24hrs to switch over – you have full use of the iPhone and all the features while I wait, other than being able to receive calls.
The manual is over a hundred pages so I still need to figure somethings out.
The image is great, I don’t have the best eye and I can read text even when very small, totally blown away by this. You get the hang of typing very quickly. In an hour I was doing okay. Has a spell-corrector feature that works most of the time.
So my main complaint is with the driving directions not being a turn by turn voice thing, “prepare to turn right in .1 mile” but I suspect that what it has will be an upgrade to most people.
Email on the road is going to be nice. Overall I’m very happy with it. Hopefully the improvement will be software and we can upgrade the phone like we do the computers

That’s the big thing all the technology reporters were discussing so I was wondering if it was as slow as they said. I’ve read that Verizon and another network have much faster internet speeds and there was a feeling that Apple will be hurt by tying themselves so closely to AT&T, which has the slowest network available today.
Good to hear from someone who actually has their hands on it though. Glad it’s working for you so far!

June 30, 2007 at 9:27 pmI was recently called by Apple to answer a survey on the FCP Studio 2 upgrade.
There was one interesting question regarding interest in future online FCP support for clients being able to do rough cuts and other project review capabilities.
I gotta wonder if the iPhone might have some sort of FCP funtion in it’s future.
Thanks for the report.

July 1, 2007 at 2:00 amI found that here in the Atl the edge network was just fine for surfing. With such a little screen, surfing is really just limited to necessity for the most part. I’d say it’s similar to 4 or 5 times modem speeds. Not great, but once you’ve downloaded the interface for a site like the cow, the rest is generally additional text or a picture or two. It wasn’t like you had to wait minutes for a page. More like 10-30 seconds depending on the content.
But no flash, and I’ve yet to get any of the quicktimes on any of my own websites to play. I’m not sure if they’re disabled for edge or what. I’ll try them on wifi later.

July 1, 2007 at 2:35 amvery good review indeed, very balanced. I would agree with 99% of what he writes. I disagree with his reason why the back space button is placed poorly, I keep hitting it by mistake.
