    Hi Folks –

I wanted to share something with you. When I interviewed someone at Sony for the NAB podcast in last month, I was given a press copy of a product called Sony Cinescore. Cinescore is a program that creates music out of themes, and is very easy to use – and a lot of flexibility regarding length, tempo…etc.

The thing is that I already use Audition for my audio editing and looping, and this is not a replacement for that. I didn’t think I’d have a real need for something like this.

Then last week, I had a meeting with a client about an animated commercial, and I could see that they weren’t going for the pitch – they didn’t feel it. So I went back to my office and recorded some audio (in which I played 4 parts, even a woman – it sounds really bad, BTW) and scored it with Cinescore – marking points for mood changes. From no script to final scored audio took about 2 hours.

In the end, I was surprised at how flexible the program was- The music made even the woman I was playing sound legit because as each character spoke the whole thing shifted. The client was totally pumped and we’re moving forward with the project.

OK, so what’s my point? Well first is, if your an independant producer (like me) then you should have a tool like this or Sonic Fire Pro (Smartsound) – even if it’s just for pitches. I haven’t used Sonic Fire Pro, but I hear good things about it. And I can say that Cinescore was easy to use, and in the end will be a lot cheeper (if I had paid for it) then buying all of the royalty free stock audio I’ve had to buy for stuff like this.

Programs like this will never fully replace real audio editing solutions, or even stock music, but for someone short on time, not great at audio editing, or just looking for a an alternative that gives fast good results, then check out cinescore and also sonic fire Pro (though again, I haven’t actually tested that one).

Anyway, just some audio food for thought for the visual community. Now back to your regularly scheduled AE discussions.

Thanks for the info Aharon. You may also want to have a look at https://www.synkaudiostudios.com/ which sounds like they have lots in common.

I’d love to take a look at Cinescore. Can you email me your contact at Sony? I’m working on a pro bono for the local ACM SIGGRAPH and it may be useful some time soon.

I am away on vacation and I don’t have the card for the person I interviewed with me, but I’ll look it up when I get back. My actual contact was a press person for one of the VP’s there, but she can probably help.

For now, they put up the cinescore site so you can get some info:

Does anyone have both, CineScore and SonicFire Pro? I just got Sonicfire Pro 4 in the mail and I really, really like it. But, after looking at Sony’s site, this looks slightly different. The Sony site doesn’t really give me much to work on.
