I’m running FCP 5.0 with the Decklink Pro HD card on a dual 2.5 G5. I’ve been looking for storage to capture/play 10-bit uncompressed 1080i and found a bunch of info on SATA2 (aka serial ATA 300, SATA II).

Has anyone setup a SATA2 RAID? It seems that with a five bay enclosure set to RAID-5, you could get over 200 megabytes per second. Any idea on the “real world” read/write speeds for SATA2 in various RAID setups?

And finally, let’s say I have one drive that read/writes XXX megabytes per second, if I add another drive in a RAID-0 configuration will I truly double the speed or is it a lesser percentage?

    Thanks in advance.

There’s no software RAID-5 solution for OSX. Also, drives 7200RPM drives are between 20-40 MB/s. With current drive speeds, SATA2 achieves absolutely nothing over SATA1, since there’s no single drive that is faster than 150MB/s.

I have an 8-disk SATA RAID-0. It’s about 250 MB/s when empty, and about 180MB/s when half full.

Heya dont know if your using PCIX card but with a 5 drive RAID 5 (Maxline 16MBCache) setup on a 1820A from Highpoint i get 240MB empty 180-170 when 3/4 full

to me SATA II for now is useless since drive are not yet using the full band of SATA 1

    hope it helps
