I have been going through a bunch of system problems. The people who reset up my computer installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on my E: drive and there is no C: drive. I believe, even with no other programs installed besides windows, changing the designation to C: is not an option. So I need to know is having the system (windows) on a drive called E: and not having a C: drive problematic… especially as I reinstall my programs?

Also:Is Windows backup and restore reliable?

    Thanks,
    Barry

I see no reason why it would be a problem other than when people tell you something is at c:\program files\Sony\Vegas 6.0\Script Menu (for example) then you’ll have to remember to translate it to e:\….. instead.

Hey Barry, the same thing happened to me last year, although I did it to myself by accident. My system ran just fine with no “C” drive assigned. I did however have a problem when trying to install a couple of programs but otherwise it was fine.

    Barry ~

If you haven’t installed anything on the system yet I would throw it back at the people built it and get them to re-do the install as a default C:\ System drive.

No doubt it will run okay but 99.9 percent of programs default to the C:\Program Files path and it’s a pain having to remember with every install/update that you have to redirect install paths, it

This has been a ‘feature’ of the Windows OS since the beginning. If it sees any other drives during install, it gives them letters _before_ the system drive. 🙁

But it makes no difference. Install paths should be checked carefully _anyway_. And few WinXP-era apps go to C: without asking. We’ve got several machines here that don’t have C: system drives, and it makes no functional day to day difference.

I’d like to see Windows abandon the 24 drive letters anyway and use user definable labels.
