Please pardon a wee bit of “off-topicness” if you will, but I felt the need to lighten-up Saturday’s serious posting with an odd occurrence from the “truth is stranger than fiction” file.

I was doing some revisions on a Cow Magazine article for Mr. Lindeboom when my computer suddenly went completely black. No it wasn’t a crash, it was Willie the dog, who had accidentally (so I hope) maneuvered himself into a comfortable position in the corner by the wall, as only dogs can, with all four feet pointed straight up, and in such a way as to yank the main plug to my UPC battery backup out of its wall socket.

The event, which could have been really bad, wasn’t so bad at all. Thankfully I only lost a little of the work I’d done… Even better is the fact that Willie’s goof pointed out to me that my faithful UPC had, unbeknownst to me, expired without so much as a whimper or a short goodbye. So, while Willie the dog did in a sense eat some of my homework, he may well have saved me great gobs of trouble down the line. Lord knows what headaches a failed UPC could have created?

So clearly, keeping a dog around to monitor your equipment can have benefits, and it helps to lower blood pressure too. I’m very lucky to have both Willie and his new little brother Augie here to help me out. I recommend furry critters in every edit bay…

I’ve owned BCM for 8 years now and we just adopted a new Lab mix a few months ago. For the first time, we have a dog in the office and she’s definitely been a welcome addition. The staff loves her, my clients just love having her around. Definitely a fun addition to the team!

there’s a shot of her in my blog!

I don’t have any pets, but my then-one-year-old son switched off my edit suite twice once when we was sitting in with me once.

Not so bad, as hitting the power switch on the box gracefully shuts it down, so the project was saved as it went down, but it was slightly panic-inducing as the project was a 48HOUR film, due to be delivered by no later than 7pm that day (it was late afternoon when he was visiting).

He’s three now, and no longer obsessed with the power button, but he really does enjoy loading tapes in the HD1400, and other places (it’s hard to get a DVCPRO HD tape out of J3 deck).

Of course, in a year or so I can train him to be my assistant… I’m not sure a dog is going to manage that… New tricks and all 🙂
