I was just looking at the JVL GZHD7US at Best Buy.

3 CCD HD Cam with built in hard drive.

I haven’t been keeping up with developments in awhile.

Would you guys update me on how the video recored by these devices compares to that recorded to mini-dv tape?

The sales guy told me they recored HD to mpeg 2 or mpeg 4… which I assume are compressed formats.

Thanks for any comments and quick update/education.

    Comparing apples to apples…
If you have a camcorder using tape that records 25Mbps (HDV) and a hard drive unit recording 25Mbps HDV, the quality is identicaly.
If you’re considering AVCHD vs HDV, AVCHD loses in most situations, even at reasonably high bitrates of 16Mbps, whether it’s recording to DVD, HDD, Memstick, or CF.
