  • OT – Edit in 720 or 1080

Here’s the scenario: You shot a scene in 1080. But you need to crop it 30% or so. Your final output is a 640×360 web clip. Is it better, in FCX, to edit in a 1080 timeline and blow up the shot to crop it, or to place it in a 720 timeline? Either way, the same subset of the original picture ends up in the final output–and it follows that the same amount of the original image is thrown away. Knowing the internal workings of FCX, is there any advantage to stepping down to a 720 timeline?

If you edit in a 1080 timeline, you’ll have to scale the video up past it’s native resolution. Definitely want to avoid that. If you edit in a 720 timeline, you can scale up and crop and stay within the native resolution. Then you can export at 640×360.
