OT: Blackmagic buys da Vinci

Just saw this. So who’s going to be first to speculate on what BM is going to do w/their new purchase?
EDIT: Might just be a rumor apparently.

September 8, 2009 at 5:19 amthe email that is posted with the announcement read like one of those, I got money to give you emails.
“FIRSTLY”? and would the start emailing before they made a public announcement.
Just a thought.

Apparently this is legit, but it sure had the feel of a “poisson d’Avril” on first read.

September 8, 2009 at 5:21 pm1) It’s true: Blackmagic is buying Da Vinci.
2) The email posted is one that Grant sent internally, and was released to address rumors that had already been springing up.
3) Official press release probably tomorrow, official rollout at IBC on Friday.
Much, much more to come from your good friends at the Cow, and their good friends at Blackmagic. 🙂

September 8, 2009 at 6:03 pmYep, definitely true. We’ve confirmed through BlackMagic and they’ll make the appropriate official announcements soon as Tim noted.
Interesting things afoot…..

September 8, 2009 at 6:46 pmHe mentions specifically in the email that he doubts this means a new lower-end product line for DaVinci.
On the other hand, if they were planning something of the sort, talking casually about it in released emails would be pretty dumb. And then on top of that people can change their minds.
But I’m not holding my breath for any low-end options from them with regards to CC.

The email was not meant for public release. You will hear more about the actual plans from BMD in the coming days at IBC. Should make for a good show for all those who are out there.

September 8, 2009 at 8:02 pm[walter biscardi] “The email was not meant for public release.”
Although just to note — when we asked for some information that they could give us before a press release was finalized (probably tomorrow), they sent us this email with express permission to publish it.
There will be much, much more coming soon, including a few things I SHOULD be working on instead of posting this. 🙂 In any case, no need to even get out of your pajamas for some great coverage of this story.
My UNOFFICIAL , PERSONAL GUESS is that there’s not a ton of room on the price of the current products. A lot of the cost of their systems is in hardware development and manufacturing, and they don’t go away with a new owner. Just a guess.
Of course, that’s near the top of the list of the questions we’ll be asking. 🙂
