April 5, 2006 at 7:51 pm[walter biscardi] “Most people completely forget that Apple is first and foremost a hardware company.”
Hi,
That is because the reason to buy their hardware (which generates most of their incomoe) is their software.
This is the business strategy that allowed MS to start taking over the OS market when Windows 1.0 was competing with early versions of the Mac OS.
Best Wishes,
Mitch

April 5, 2006 at 7:57 pm[Rich Rubasch] “I wonder if it will allow a dual-boot state with both OS running at the same time, like Virtual PC.”
Hi Rich,
I agree its a better solution but no, it only allows the choice of booting one OS or the other.
There is speculation that in future OS’s they might allow both OS’s to run at the same time but Apples statements about not selling or supporting XP make that seem less likely.
This will be much easier to accomplish with OSX running on Intel so it will probably just be a matter of time.
For example (scroll down):
https://www.macrumors.com/
Techworld.com reports that a company called Parallels will be announcing their virtualization product for Intel-based Macs later this week.According to a company representative, “We will enable users to run multiple operating systems (like Linux and Windows) simultaneously with Mac OS X”.
This is distinct from the dual-boot solutions that have been previously described. Instead, users can run these alternative operating systems in a window under Mac OS X.
Best Wishes,
Mitch

April 5, 2006 at 8:05 pmI think you are mistaken on some points.
First, most people can barely get their head around a computer let alone dual boot systems. Even Apple OS 9 and OS X dual boot system where problematic to many users – especially the casual computers that Apple is trying to attract.
Second DVI, DVD, wireless and optical audio where standard on PCs before on Macs. It may not be built in on motherboard, but nevertheless ‘standard.’ There is a misconception that if it is not on a Dell, it must not be a standard on PC. In fact, like most inovative ideas – smaller companies like Alienware, Winbook, etc where loading up laptops far ahead of the bigger companies. You would be surprise to know that G5’s aluminum design was 2-3 years behind companies like Lian-Li.
Back to the topic – the problem with the Windows on Mac is that there is no tech support. The target audience for this *needs* tech support. This is why your typical Dell, HP, etc have at least 1 year – if not 3 years of tech support. Far longer than many Apple products.
If Windows support this officially *and* they support OS X in PC, then I think you will get casual PC users interested.Apple have slowly addressed many of the complaints of the PC users wanting to transition (performance, 3D, etc), but there are still somethings left.

April 6, 2006 at 5:18 amDoesn’t anybody get it? Windows machines DO run OSX. Only one company makes these windowsxp machines. Apple Computer Corp. I may be making a little bit of a joke here, but all new machines running Leopard will have this ability built in. Apple even provides the hardware drivers. How long until vendors will sell you a mac with Windows XP preinstalled?
I beg to differ Walter. Apple is a software company masquerading as a hardware company until it loses the hardware war. They’re losing it bit by bit as they become the same hardware. ADB, SCSI, Serial, PowerPC, even the memory, has all become standardized to USB, ATA, Intel, etc.
Apple could sell it’s software to the other 95% if it simply let it’s OS run on all intel boxes. And if that doesn’t work they can sell their software to run on Windows like iTunes does now. Why not sell DVDSP or FCExpress or iLife or Aperture to the masses like Adobe?
If this move doesn’t create enough hardware switchers you’ve got to believe the above is a backup plan. Hell, if they really are just a hardware company, they’d sell more hardware by making the best PC machines out there and compete with the high end PC machines like Sony.
Oh, wait. They just did that!
