Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy OT: Apple pulls out of NAB

That end of the market is very small in the scheme of Apple’s sales. Apparently Avid didn’t think it large enough to come this year either…

Hey they’ve not announced they’re not going to IBC… isn’t that show closer to you than Vegas?

What is to stop them from showing you anything you want to see? You go to Cupertino instead of Vegas? Have they not said they have “other plans” for marketing in the article that broke the story? I’d not jump ship just yet, because you can’t see Avid’s offerings in Vegas either. (Likely a big reason that Apple also dropped out, they have little to lose and millions to gain.)

The notion that it’s all up for sale is very far fetched. They sell a lot of Mac’s for use with FCP.

Apple doesn’t sell anything… they kill it. Name the last time Apple sold an application to anybody. You can’t, because they don’t sell it off… Thompson’s purchase of Avid sure sounds more likely to me.

I think it’s far too early to speculate what’s next anyway. And that is what all of this thread is full of.

[Craig Seeman] “Hey, I think tradeshows like NAB are important and I think Apple is making a mistake by pulling out but if Apple knows anything they KNOW Marketing and if I’d suspect ANYTHING I’d suspect a NEW marketing approach to the Pro user.”

I have some new thoughts about all of this in my blog this morning and they involve the possibility of the long-rumored Final Cut Extreme…….

The phrase “storm in a teacup” is one that comes to mind.

It has never been in Apple’s culture to build products up and sell them on. Most companies do this but not Apple because they are master magicians of control. Selling a part of the company amounts to a hurting of pride and shows weakness. Would they have pulled out of the NAB show floor if Avid hadn’t pulled out first? No chance.

A major factor in the resurgence of Apple has been their ability to acquire other companies in their quest for control over a market sector. The Pro Apps are a shining example of this and the strategy has paid off brilliantly.

Spinning Pro Apps off to a wholly owned subsidiary (like the Filemaker Inc situation) might be a possibility but why would they bother? FileMaker Inc branding makes sense for a cross-platform database where the Apple name could be seen as detrimental to suit-wearing Windows users but the advantages of Pro Apps being part of the Apple brand would seem to far outweigh any disadvantages. Ultimately Pro Apps sell Macs, there’s an undeniable link there.

What is for certain is that since the iMac, Apple has finally broken out of their pro user niche of music, video and publishing and become a massively successful consumer company. Does that consumer success naturally lead to dumping all or part of the pro user market where Apple are now in a uniquely powerful position? I very much doubt it. Mr Jobs isn’t known for giving up hard won control so easily.

Any more educated speculation on the story with Thomson ?

Frank writes “Potential buyers include Thompson, which has been on an acquisition spree of late, and would love to add an industrial strength NLE to its newsroom offerings.”

Which makes plenty of sense except for the fact that they (Thomson) already did that when they acquired Canopus in Dec 2005 (including the Edius Broadcast NLE system) … and over the course of the following months were plenty of tall tales regarding roadmaps for integration with the Thomson/GVG broadcast and newsroom systems. Ha! Two years on and we’re all still waiting.

And so I find myself in a speculatory dilemma … whilst I hope and pray that Thomson does not ever hold the reins of FCP and the Apple Pro Apps in general, it would be just darn great to show that butt ugly Edius the door!

Well, the only thing I can say about that is Edius is not FCP so you’re talking about a company (Thompson) little known outside live broadcast production, taking a non-linear editing package that has a small user base to begin with, and then expecting that marriage to increase th Edius name and user base.

With FCP you’ll be taking a huge user base to any company that wishes to purchase the app, provided of course that Apple is really thinking of selling. One guy writing one article and we all jump into this discussion (including myself) about Apple selling pro-apps.

Kind of like the Avid is bankrupt discussions we had a few months ago. I still think Avid is hurting for money so that’s their reason for saving the bucks on the show. Apple is probably of case of “why should we spend money on the show if our biggest competitor won’t be there.” Or it could be a pre-cursor to a sale about to happen and someone else will be taking their booth spot. Or it’s a case of an incredibly brilliant marketing move on their part so all we’ll do is speculate on Apple and NAB until the show opens.

If history repeats itself, and there’s no reason to think it won’t, Apple would kill FCS before they sold it. They’ve never sold application software in their history, so why would they do this now? It makes money, and gives them a panache they wouldn’t have otherwise.

Manufacturers dropping out of trade shows is happening in every industry world wide… it’s part of the evolution that’s happening in marketing in general. The Internet is the future of this and with bandwidth to spare, there’s little that can ONLY be demonstrated at a trade show, and the audience is likely to be a ton larger than the folks who show up at NAB…
We all know that Apple has historically been first at a LOT of movements… This one is no different.

Even my dog and pony scenario saves money for Apple. True it’s hard to see 10 stations all in a row running from a SAN that way, but from my point of view, that part of the market doesn’t justify a 10 million dollar investment so that 1 in 10 of those custmers can see it for 10 minutes in the loudest environment possible…

The talk of Apple selling the Pro Apps off is way off base, and totally misinformed, and ridiculous. Consider the source folks…

Ain’t gonna happen don’t think. Why on earth would they want to give up all those Mac Pro sales? They make money on the apps them selves too…

The only time I’ve seen companies sell off stuff is because it doesn’t fit their line somehow (check, it only sells about 1/2 of the Mac Pro sales) or it’s losing money. (Apple is selling FCS everyday to more and more new users – witness this by just cruising the forums… they are ALWAYS full of newbies… Neither of these cases are true of the Pro apps and Apple.

This is the last I’m posting in the thread, and it’s because it’s a huge “much ado about nothing”… I’m becoming repetitive any way…

    OK so I lied.

    THIS is the last time.

What you’ve written in the Blog is more likely true than the rumors of a sell off, or rumors that there will be no more development.

    Im a schizophrenic:

I am an Apple fanboy – and a strong critic at the same time.

My concern is the pro-apps, and their future.

Apple has a history of keeping secret all the things that are to come, which makes sense when it comes to the consumer products.

But : I feel that when they are not able to say simple things like :
“We will add blu-ray support before the end of 2008 ” – i get worried, so worried in fact that I bought the adobe apps that support it already…..

    The same thing with SHAKE:
Its EOL as people know, and this new “phenomenon” app is rumoured.. BUT WHEN?????
People in compositing are running in a stampede-like fashion to learn and BUY Nuke – and when the “penomenon” eventually emerges ( if ever ) , the purchases are made, and there might be no going back for those that have made the investments in both hardware
(PCS running LINUX maybe?? ) and training….

So Apple : Why not announce something? Like :
” The SHAKE replacement is coming 2008, You are not forgotten, and we intend to sell more than Ipods, rentals and MP3S….”

I need to go NUKE soon – but i could wait if APPLE gave us a timeframe – if not then well:

The fantastic visual design of your products are just not enough…….. I need to do my work.

    Just my two cents worth:

Now fellow-apple fanboys : Feel free to bite my head off……

You make a good point – sometimes Apples OTT secrecy doesn’t help at all. I’m going to buy the Adobe Suite soon just to get Blu Ray as well – very frustrating considering Apple are a member of the Blu Ray Consortium and they have done nothing. I can understand a long delay in releasing software that supports the advanced BR features but I would have expected basic BR support by now.

I highly doubt the rumor of the sale of the ProApps, especially to “Thompson” as it’s spelled “Thomson”.

To me, this sounds like a rumor circulated by Avid to make themselves appear to be a more sound choice.
