[Devin Crane] “There was a thread about Apple selling their Pro Apps last week now it’s gone. Did Apple contact the cow to cut it? I don’t know maybe I went blind and just can’t find it.”

It’s all down below your post. I’m seeing all the posts about the sale rumors.

Did you get to the thread via email. I can see them from there but if you navigate to it from the main page all references to Pro App Sales are gone even from other threads in the FCP forum.

set your FCP forum to VIEW more than one week. this thread started over a week ago so it will not be visible if you are only looking at the current week. I can see the whole thread. the sky is not falling!

I avoided commenting in this thread up til now, but I have to comment. For the record, I believe this is a rumor and ONLY a rumor. By whom, likely someone not connected with a competitor, but most likely someone who uses that product and likes to berate the competition…like the trolls we see in forums saying “why doesn’t FCP do ____ when I can do _____ all day long on my NLE?” Pure rumor.

Now, as for the pissing match of what NLE is better…I am tired of hearing this. I could care less what NLE was used on academy award winning films. What matters is the artist behind the tools, the ability to tell a story. The story gets told whether it was edited with FCP or Avid, shot with a Panavision or the RED camera. The feature world is still dominated by Avid for good reason, it was designed to work in this situation. FCP wasn’t initially, it was an after thought. So using it in features might be a bit more difficult, but, it depends on the situation. If it is shot on film, and needs a film cut, Avid is the way to go. If it was shot on HDCAM SR with the Viper, and you want to edit offline at DVCPRO HD, then conform the DPX files later…FCP might be the wise choice. If you work in a newsroom situation, the Avid is the clear choice (until we see what FCP Server has to offer). If you want to import a multitude of formats ranging from MPEG-2 to 3GP to DVCPRO HD to h.264 and you want them all to work in real time on the timeline, you use Premiere Pro.

Choices…we need choices. If the only choice we had for a car was the Prius, that would be bad. If you live in Montana and need to get to your home that is up a steep hill covered in snow, you are SOL. If you the only soda choice was Coka-cola, life would suck (I like Dr. Pepper). If you had nails, screws, nuts and bolts and you needed to assemble a playhouse, and all you had was a screwdriver…now what?

There will be a market for FCP…a huge one. NOT just independent producers, but many many television production companies. Avid has a market, Premiere has a market, Vegas has a market, Edius has a market. There is not one NLE that fits all situations and I don’t want that. I edit on Avids on certain types of projects. Then I use FCP in others where cutting on an Avid doesn’t make sense.

I don’t see Apple selling FCP to anyone…there is no reason to. It helps them sell machines…just like the iPhone and iTunes helps them convert people to Macs. No, the market for pro machines isn’t as huge as the market for consumer ones, but does it need to be? As long as you are selling something and making money, isn’t that good? Why must the mentality of “it isn’t selling ENOUGH…it isn’t big ENOUGH…we need it to be BIGGER” be the only option? I find it to be a stupid mentality. Just like the Wall Street morons who suddenly sell and devalue Apple stock just because it didn’t meet some arbitrary benchmark. Apple made a profit, just not as big as they thought, so therefore they think Apple is failing and their stock tanks because…who the heck knows why.

Trade shows cost a lot of money to go to. Apple doesn’t have any big announcement this year. Nor does Avid. So why spend the gobs of cash to go “yup, we are still here…nothing new. But we are still here.” Money better spent elsewhere…perhaps to make up the perceived deficit in making the proapps. Perceived as no one here knows how much it costs to make the proapps vs how many they sell. Remember, 800,000+ copies LAST YEAR…who knows what it is up to this year. That is approximately $1.04 BILLION in sales. Number would vary due to purchasing original software then updates. That is a hefty sum JUST for the FCS software.
