OT: Apple pulls out of NAB

That’s kind of my point. Avid has acquired many great technologies over the years.
The Avid DS (Softimage) is the best example. It’s an editing system with a proper node based compositing system. A DS editor I know was at a forum with Avid to discuss the system. When issues were brought up, they were told that known bugs were not going to be fixed because they didn’t have the budget.
Owners of older DS hardware were given little incentive to upgrade to the latest hardware.
The story I’ve been told has a story line that pited the DS developers with the Tewkesbury developers with an us-or-them ultimatum.
From what I hear, there is little to no development going on with DS. The original developers have been let go. They moved the Nitrus hardware over to the Symphony.
Unless things have greatly changed, I don’t see Final Cut having any future at Avid if it were to be purchased by them.

In my mind, not plausible unless Avid intends to just kill it so their products again take front and center. But that’s a awfully expensive purchase just to kill a product.
Anyone remember the Pinnacle CinéWave for Final Cut Pro? To this day it still had features like “real” realtime Chroma Key. Avid purchased Pinnacle and the CineWave was one of the first things to go.

Yes, you speak alot of truth about DS which I have used for 13
years. They DO continue to develop it, but at a bare minimum.
I always felt they bought it from Softimage because it represented a big threat…and proceeded to kill it softly with bare bones developments. -
No no no no no way that Avid started this rumor. Absolutely inconceivable. Read my posts above — this would be an utter disaster for Avid, in ways that FCP at Apple never, ever will be.
I know that we live in post, but seriously guys, Thomson saddling up on FCP would wreak havoc in digital newsrooms, real-time multi-format encoding, playout servers, broadcast graphics, IT infrastructure, largescale collaboration tools…all areas where Avid is currently growing like gangbusters, but FCP/Thomson would shut right down.
In other words, this is ALREADY creating FUD **within** Avid. They don’t have any FUD around this to push out.
Note that I don’t think it’s true at all. Even though I think it really would be interesting for Thomson, I truly believe FCP is staying at Apple…
…and after working at Avid, I’m POSITIVE that they would be the last ones on earth to start a rumor that, if it came true, would be a disaster beyond imagination, far more devastating than anything that could possibly happen in post alone.

There was a thread about Apple selling their Pro Apps last week now it’s gone. Did Apple contact the cow to cut it? I don’t know maybe I went blind and just can’t find it.
