OT: Any kind of book or manual on FCX?
Posted by Rafael Amador on July 9, 2011 at 5:36 pmSorry I’m an old guy that needs some help but doesn’t wan’t to miss “the future”.
Any kind of book or printed manual from somebody who really knows how this application works?

July 9, 2011 at 5:48 pmThere are loads of really comprehensive video tutorials already published by Larry Jordon, Ripple Training, Michael Wohl at Macprovideo, Izzy Video and as well as the podcasts at Creative Cow.
The only book I know of to date is by Philip Hodgetts:
Conquering the metadata foundations of Final Cut Pro X | The present and future of post production business and technology
Also available as a pdf

July 9, 2011 at 7:37 pmIn many ways FCPX is the NLE that I dreamed of in the late ’80s when I first started using them pre Avid.
Understanding the use of metadata and that FCPX is very much a Relational Database, even as you examine the timeline is important. It’s like moving from a spreadsheet to a database.
Philip Hodgetts seems to focus on those aspects in his writings. I would love to see tutorials focusing on the organizational techniques in FCPX. It’s interwoven in some of our Techniques posts but it hasn’t been explored or “tutored” explicitly yet. That not only means understanding the Keyword, Collections, Events, Projects model but how all that plays with Connected Clips and Connected Storylines.
A lot of our techniques are focused on the “micro” completion of a specific function. I’m thinking how to go about exposing the “macro” techniques of organizing jobs (from Events to Collections and Projects) to taking best advantage of the new timeline features.
There’s another forum for the philosophical discussion. I’m trying to think about how to present in a practical manor.

July 9, 2011 at 9:05 pmCraig, that would be a really useful direction to go in.
There will be a plethora of manuals and tutorials produced to teach the new techniques and workflows required to work successfully with FCPX. But understanding the power and of metadata is what will make sense of this all.
For those who have not seen the clips of Philip Hodgetts FCPX Meta Data LAFCPUG presentation on the 28th June here’s a link.
