I blew the video card out of my 2 year old MacPro a couple of weeks ago and was dead in the water. Even with an Apple Care service contract the folks at the “Genius Bar” still told me that my card was “too old” and that they didn’t have a direct replacement for it available. They (Apple) finally found a refurbished card in another city and had it sent to me. Granted, it was on their nickel. Don’t get me wrong about Apple. I bought my first Apple computer in 1981-an Apple II+ and I’ve been with them ever since. But a two year old card can’t be replaced? C’mon…

    Pick any two.

The cycle of planned obsolescence is diminishing rapidly. Tech development cycles are proportional to the return on R&D. So as tech becomes cheaper, it is necessary to develop new products faster and get more turnover. As graphics cards are now so cheap, buy two and store one as a spare.

OK, so by way of comparison, you should try and take a PC to a service centre 2 years after it was bought… I work for an APR and I can tell you that the case above about the graphics card is VERY rare- we still have 3 year old ipod replacements, 3 year old motherboard, graphics cards and HDD’s are constantly replaced as well. Seriously, one of the main selling points for apple is that their computers DONT become obsolete very quickly at all. Sure, you can only BUY the new models, but by comparison, they’re the best solution, from that point of view. Now get back to work 😀
