OS 10.5 Leopard upgrage still available anywhere?
Posted by Tom Matthies on November 11, 2010 at 11:33 pmI am using an older G5 as an offline storage computer. I have a couple of older, but still functioning Huge RAIDS attached to it. I’d like to use it for temporary storage of files that I need to convert on a PC running ProCoder.
The old G5 is running Tiger (10.4.11) and I would like to upgrade it to Leopard 10.5.xx (not Snow Leopard) but I’m having problems locating the older software needed to do the upgrade. Leopard had much better networking capabilities that Tiger lacks and would give the G5 the ability to better work with the other computers on the group.Any ideas where to locate “antique” software to do this upgrade?

November 12, 2010 at 12:47 amYeah unfortunately this product didn’t escape apples up to date attitude and it breaches licences for any apple premium reseller to sell it now! Odd I know…

November 12, 2010 at 2:20 amNice, Zane! Very nice. 🙂
I did, however try a Google search first off but as Phillip mentioned earlier, any place that’s still selling it is very expensive-over $200 in fact. I was hoping to find a more reasonably priced outlet to get it. I can get a Snow Leopard update for $29 on Amazon and right next to that is a Leopard update priced at $220! Doesn’t seem quite right, does it?

November 12, 2010 at 2:23 amKeep in mind that when Apple did sell Leopard it was $129.
And Snow Leopard won’t work on your machine. It is intel only.

But I guess easy to say for any question anyone ever asks.. so I guess why does anyone ever need to ask questions ever…?
Maybe for personal insight you cant get from google… Maybe for hidden gems not sitting on the top hits page of google… maybe…..
I for one am tired of seeing the so many folks so ready to jump on posters with “go google it” as their cry…

Please understand that the season people sometimes respond with things like that is because the question is often so simple or asked so many times that a simple search is MUCH faster then posting a question and then waiting for someone else to respond to it.
When tying to find an answer to a question one should always try and find the solution themselves by do ing a search both via the web and by using the index in the user manual. If you can’t find the answer or are unsatisfied with the answer, or confused at the answer then fine, post a question and say “I looked but could not find an answer” or “I was trying to figure out what so and so means and after searching I’m still confused”
For example in this case, if the poster had said “Im looking to upgrade my old PPC machine to Leopard, every place I find that sells it, is selling it for so much more then Snow Leopard. Why is that and do you know where I might find a cheeper copy” That post would have told us that yes you did search to find a copy to buy, but you are wondering why it is so much more expensive.
Another BIG reason people respond and simply say to search is because the question is brought up SO MANY TIMES. For example “How do I get footage from a DVD into FCP?” or “Why do I always get dropped frames when I edit the h.264 video from my new camera?” Those questions are asked so many times that even just scrolling down the forum for a minute or so would provide you with the answer because it has been asked several times a day.

November 12, 2010 at 4:17 pmRight.
Even when it seems like a simple question with a simple answer, that’s not always the case. There seems to be a lot of people in the same situation looking for Leopard. Judging from the number of responses to nearly every posting of Leopard for sale on eBay, it looks like there are a LOT of people looking for this older software. Just about every post for Leopard has MANY people bidding on the item. And the prices aren’t too attractive. If you look at the entries, it might not seem like the price is not too bad, but like most items on eBay, the price will jump dramatically at the end of the suction. There are a lot of older G5’s still in service and they are still useful. It’s just too bad that Apple has such a propensity for obsoleting their hardware so quickly. My G5 was an End of Life product less than 4 months after I took delivery. Can my MacPro be far behind? I can still get some use out of the G5 as a file server, but it’ll be more difficult with the limited networking afforded by Tiger.
I’ll keep looking but there are times when the “simple” isn’t.

Apple Waits about 5 years before they declare a machine obsolete. Try taking a machine that old to the Genius Bar and they will tell you they cannot get parts.
I would hardly call 5 years quick.
