Organizing and archiving Adobe Premiere Clips
I’m working on a project involving a very gifted and talkative African Grey parrot. Part of this involves many many hours of footage recorded that will probably be thrown away. The bird knows well over a thousand words and can combine them into almost an unlimited number of sentences. As you can see from the Youtube channel she already has hundreds of videos and she learns new words practically every day so we are struggling to keep up. The result I’m looking for is to use Adobe Premiere to cut clips from the footage and put them in bins to organize them by what she says or does then tag them for quality, location, etc. So the end result would be like a library of hundreds or even thousands of clips.
Shooting in 1080p so I bring in a 15 minute clip or so and then go through making subclips. Let’s say i get 20 clips from the footage. I would then like to splice out the 20 clips I need for the project and throw the raw footage away. We simply can’t keep what we don’t need as we are filming perhaps 8 hours a day in the hopes of extracting out about 30 minutes of reasonable footage.
I tried using the manage project but I still ended up in a resulting project that is absolutely huge. It doesn’t seem to really trim out the clips or I don’t know how to use it right.
What I thought would be simple has turned into something complex. Am I going to have to run each sub-clip through an export and then pull it back into premiere as raw?

The Project Manager won’t trim footage that is Long-GOP based. That’s likely your issue. Can you shoot with a camera that uses intra-frame compression (DVCPro HD, etc.), or encode to another codec before editing?

Thanks for the help!! Any recommendations on what I should encode to? My ideal solution would be to go to H.254 for web but I’d like to keep the quality as high as possible just in case some of the footage could be used for a DVD documentary / Independent film type application.

A lot of people are transcoding to one of the DNxHD codecs from Avid for intra-frame codec editing. They’re free.
