I’d like some advice on the most cost-effective way to accelerate previewing and rendering in After Effects. Is is a matter of having a monster OpenGL card? Is there other hardware out there made specifically for juicing up AE? Or is network rendering the way to go? Are there other options? What do the professional motion graphics artists use? Thanks!

Currently there’s no gain in OpenGL for rendering.

A fast CPU, loads of fast RAM and fast discs. Roughly in that order.

The next step could be a dual CPU machine, which won’t take al the advantage of the 2nd CPU in AE, but it will speed things up.

And as you’ve guessed, multi-machine rendering can speed up the process significantly. Even with rather ‘cheap’ render nodes, since they don’t even need a sound card, or any serious videocard.
