I have a few secondhand Panasonic camcorders (eg: two VXF999s, a VX878, a WX979, a VXF11 and a couple of other similars) which I use to video local amateur shows and plays. I then edit ‘multicam’ with Final Cut Pro X. Stage lighting varies quite a bit and I often have to raise or lower exposure during the editing process.

I have all the cameras set on AVCHD, with manual focus, White Balance setting 1 (“Incandescent light, video lights like in the studio, etc”.), Shutter at 1/50 and Iris set on Open 6dB. I’m usually behind two of the camcorders but the others I set up elsewhere in the space with no possibility of adjusting anything once the curtain has opened.

My question is, are these reasonable settings? Should I have the shutter at 1/100 or something else? What should I have the Iris on for a typical stage? I suppose I’m looking for settings that will somehow even things out for me so I’ll lose facial features less and yet still better capture the low light moments in the shows.
