  • Optimising imported still image sizes for Vegas import

    Hi Folks,

I regulary import still image sequences into Vegas 8 for rostum-style track motion work. I’ve noticed that sometimes the images stay sharper than others, but it’s difficult to maintain the really crisp data from the master files when zooming in (3x/4x).

Does anyone know what the maximum size image Vegas will accept as ‘super-data’ thats’ held outside the main project canvas size? This seems to be a bit of a black art and results seem to depend on the format of the imported images/project settings. Obviously even on a full HD project it’s quite easy to import much bigger images from even amateur stills cameras, but often they go soft when I try to zoom in.

I’ve solved this to some degree by importing cropped-down versions of the master images and using them on additional tracks, but this mean I have to get the alignment spot-on as the ‘sharp’ dta comes in.

Hoepully someone out there will understand what I’m on about if they’ve had the same problem!

    Thanks.

Stop using Track Motion. Use Pan/Crop instead.

Track Motion will take your image and scale it down to the output resolution BEFORE it starts to zoom so you will always get inferior results. Pan/Crop maintains the full resolution so you can zoom way in and still have pristine images.

    Bless you John,

This is a great example of technical forums at their best: you can spend hours tearing your hair out thinking “There must be a simple solution to this problem” and someone can put you out of your misery in a few minutes!

Thanks again – it works perfectly.

Also Vegas sems to like PNG files @ 1440 x 960. Really Hi-Rez photos will tend to slow Vegas down.

    Thanks Allen.

I have some pretty big files in now as BMPs – (8000 x 3500 due to the odd ‘panoramic’ aspect ratio). This is now working fine and holding its resolution on zoom thanks to John’s earlier advice about using the crop rather than the track motion controls. It also seems to be reasonably quick, although in fairness the machine is fairly high spec.

I’ll try the PNG option though as it will be easy enough to swap these out on the project and see if it produces a better result.
