Hi, I’m trying to get the best out of After Effects. I have a WIN 7 x64 PC with an AMD X6 1090T CPU (6 cores) and 12GB RAM. In AE I have allocated 4GB of RAM to “other programs” which leaves 8GB free for AE. When I set the CPU/memory settings I can either have 4 cores each with 1.5GB RAM or 5 cores each with 1GB RAM. In AE 2GB RAM reduces available cores down to two. I’ve tried to reduce “other program” RAM to 3GB but it makes no difference to these combinations.

On this basis which is the best setting? Is it better to have 5 cores using 1GB RAM each or 4 cores using 1.5GB RAM? I don’t understand why 4 cores can’t use 2GB RAM if 8GB is available but for some reason AE won’t allow this.

    Any help/advice appreciated.

Thanks Todd that was very helpful. After reading this information I’ve set AE to 4 cores with 1.5 RAM each as this seems a good balance.
