  • Optimal hard drive setup Vegas 14 question / can Vegas use a scratch disk?

I just build a new machine.

    Intel Core i7-6850K
    64GB RAM
    NVIDIA 1070
    2TB SAMSUNG EVO 850 SSD

I’m debating what to do for additional discs for optimal 4K.

I know ideally it should be:
    OS / Programs – SSD
    Scratch Disk – SSD
    Project Disk – SSD

I have plenty of 4TB WD Black drives that hold projects. A lot of my projects are 1TB or bigger. Right now I’m debating what to do with my second SSD.

I’m currently testing a project in Vegas that’s 500GB of 4K fiitage on a Samsung EVO 850. I notice zero difference at any resolution setting in where stutters occur on playback in Vegas between a 7200rpm WD Black drive and the SSD. It does better than my old machine, but not much. I’ve tried with and without GPU assistance. It seems better without GPU assistance (which is disappointing).

I do a lot of After Effects work so I’m leaning towards using this 500GB SSD as scratch disc and just sticking with 7200rpm drives for the moment.

    My questions:
    – Is there something I should be doing to get better playback out of Vegas. (I’m a little underwhelmed at what a 5 year newer machine that’s borderline maxed out can do.)
    – Does Vegas utilize scratch discs at all? Is there a setting for that? Is that the temporary files folder?
    – And then, if Vegas does utilize scratch discs what’s a better use of an additional SSD – scratch disc or project file disc
