I’ll be working with 10-bit uncompressed material so I’m looking for a low-cost but reliable RAID solution for capture and playback. Anyone had any experience with these storage options?

I’ve read through previous posts, so I know the concensus is that Medea and Huge Systems are the most reliable, but I read that you, Walter, have been using the S2S for a while now, so I was hoping you might have some insight on the Lacie. The Promax and Wiebetech also look like good value. This isn’t going to be for any well-paid project, so cost is a big factor. That said, I have trouble building sandcastles, so I’m not about to try and assemble a RAID array.

I have access to two different systems, so I can go with PCI X or PCIe. Which should open the door to using any of the devices mentioned.

    Thanks to all.

[JoStand] “I can go with PCI X or PCIe”

    Hi,

If you go PCIe you will probably be able to continue to use it when you purchase newer Mac’s. Also for that reason resale value should be higher if you ever want to sell it.

    Best Wishes,

Solid unit, have no problem recommending it at all. We’ve been running it since January and speeds are holding steady at 135MB/sec and we’re well over 50% full on the 1TB array. It’s running in the RAID + 1 so four drives are striped together and 1 in standby.

We’ve been running it with 8bit uncompressed SD as these corporate projects really don’t require 10bit. The editor just loves it and we just added a LaCie Two Big 500GB SATA unit as well. We’re running it on a Kona 2 system with primarily DigiBeta and DVCAM material.

Excellent news. Thanks for the low-down, Walter.

And thanks to you, too, Mitch for the advice.
