I’m trying to recover some old projects that were created in either Premiere 5 or 6. The one of the editors from that time said that they were Premiere 5 projects, though looking at the projects file in a text editor, the header shows “version=6”.

Either way, when opening the project in Premiere Pro, I get the following error message: “The project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened.”

There are over 50 project files, and they all throw the same error, and I also tried starting a new project and then importing the old one into it, with the same results.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Do I need to re-install an earlier version, or is there any way to get the projects into Premiere Pro?

As far as I know its not backward compatible. I have tried importing 6.5 project files into Pro 1.5 with the same problem. However I now have 1.5 and 2.0 running on my system at the same time so maybe you can just get the old version and run it along side.

I have imported a 6.5 project into 2.0…..Just did it a couple of days ago actually. Have you tried changing the old project file extension from .ppj to .prproj ? Not sure if that would work….just make a copy of one of your old projects and give it shot.
    Good Luck!
