opening MP4 video pixelated

What codec does the MP4 file use? if it’s DivX or Xvid, that’s your problem. Vegas doesn’t support those formats.

I don’t know what codec the file uses. I downloaded the Youtube video using Keepvid. I’ve tried converting the mp4 to an avi using “Pazera MP4 to AVI Converter” several different ways, but then I can’t see the video using Sony Vegas. Is there a better way to convert it?

Keepvid is cool utility but Vegas doesn’t like the MP4 files that it creates. Try using a converter like Super(c) to convert them to a more Vegas friendly format. DV, MJPEG, WMV, HuffYUV, or Lagarith would all be OK.

Thanks. Actually I already found Super today and have been trying different combinations. The video looks great using HuffYUV, but I haven’t found the right codec to work for audio. I’ve tried AAC, ADCPM, and MP3. What do you think will work?

Great! You got Super and HuffYUV working.

For audio just use PCM uncompressed.

OK. I tried PCM and Super only converts the first few seconds then nothing. What now?

Maybe Super converts it, but Sony Vegas only loads first few seconds of audio?

I’m not seeing this problem so I don’t know what to say. I just used keepvid to save a video from YouTube and then re-encode with the latest Super(c) build.35 (Jan 5, 2009) using avi | huffYUV (lossless) | WAV-(pcm 16 little-endian) and the entire video and audio came into Vegas Pro 8.0c without any problems. I touched no other parameters. It just worked (sorry).

This is really frustrating. I have 6 mp4 videos from youtube all downloaded the same using Keepvid. I’ve now tried converting using the same codecs and opening in Sony Vegas just as you did. Two worked just fine. Four have only 2 seconds of sound. I can’t seem to make sense of it since they are all starting and ending in the same formats. Could this be because I’m using the 30-day trial of Sony Vegas Pro 8?

Colleen, maybe it’s time to ty another utility.
I’ve had great success using Free Studio from DVD VideoSoft.
I use the YouTube to iPod converter and drop the mp4 files onto my Vegas Pro 8 timeline with no problems.
