  • Opening FCP3 projects in FCP5

Posted by Daryl K davis on September 2, 2005 at 2:06 am

I am having trouble opening a project originally created in FCP3 in FCP5. Is this possible or is there a trick involved?

    Thanks

Sure it’s possible. FCP should bring up a dialogue box that this is an older project and would you like to update it to FCP 5? Answer Yes and choose Best for the motion tab rendering.

Strange that I can open older projects created in FCP4 but not FCP3. It just kind of blips and that’s it… no query box comes up asking to update or anything.

Could it be they were created on an older Mac OS9 system?

Being made on OS9 makes on difference. I little more detail about exactly what’s happening and when might help. What happens when you double click on the project icon? What happens when you control-clcik and choose open with? What does the icon look like? Is it a normal FCP project file icon?

It appears that it may be a corrupt project file. Double clicking simply launches the basic FCP5 app with no project data. Option clicking and opening with FCP4.5 does the same.

The project file was originally created by a person who logged a bunch of tapes on their own system for me. It must have been corrupted when they saved it to a flash drive to transport over to my edit suite. I guess I can just get them to create a batch capture list for me instead.

    Thanks

Further to my previous post it does appears that the ‘Date Created’ column in the FCP3 project I received just consists of four dashes (—-) in the directory window, so something must have happened in transport.

If you can, make the person reformat their USB drive as HFS+ instead of crappy FAT. I had no end of problems with mine until I made it mac only. And who really cares if PC’s can’t read it anyway.

    Cheers,
