I have a client who is trying to open a project I worked on and saved in FCP 6 in FCE 4. They tried opening the project in FCE and it would not open. I didn’t they would be able to, so I exported an XML out of FCP 6 but they were still not able to open it. Why wouldn’t FCE open and re-create the project from the XML?

What format of video are you using in FCP. The reason I ask is because FCE is vary limited on the formats it will use.

It is DVCPRO25. The project files came to me originally from FCE 4 and I opened and (re-saved as a different project) in FCP 6.0.3. My client tells me they can’t open either the project I worked on and saved in FCP 6.0.3 but also the XML export I created as a backup.

    [Charles Angelis] “DVCPRO25”

I believe that FCE is limited to DV & HDV.

This doesn’t make sense to me. The media I am using came from FCE. I did not change the sequence settings.

Well then its probably not DVCPRO25.

The Sequence is DV/DVCRPO NTSC. I don’t remember what the item properties for the clips was. Any idea why I can’t round-trip a project from FCP 6 to FCE 4, even with an XML? Is it that FCE does not have XML import abilities?

[Charles Angelis] “Is it that FCE does not have XML import abilities?”

No clue if they do, but be sure to save it off as an early XML format. FCP 6 offers 4 levels of XML file save. I find that when I send XML’s to folks with FCP 5 or earlier, I need to save it off as an XML Version 1 or 2.

Might be the same with FCE.

As a rule, FCE does not work well at all with FCP projects.

I don’t think that FCP projects are “downward” compatible to FCE. And I don’t know that FCE has any XML import or export, either.

FCE4 does have XML import. You might try versions 1 and 2 of XML. There also might be something that was done in FCP project that FCE cannot parse in the XML file.

    All the best,
