OpenGL, by a show of hands
Posted by Aharon Rabinowitz on March 20, 2009 at 1:05 pmHi folks –
By a show of hands, do any of you render or preview using AE’s OpenGL?
Thanks.

March 20, 2009 at 1:56 pmSame here … never to render and only occasionally for previews.
For me, it’s only been far more trouble than it’s worth and none of the other AE users I know have experienced different. Because I’ve heard some say it’s only an issue on one platform or the other, I’ll also mention that I work on both platforms daily and I for one have found it to be the same on both.

March 20, 2009 at 2:01 pmHardly ever.
When AE is acting strange, It’s usually one of the first things I check just to be sure it’s off. Mac users have never had strong OpenGL support in AE – maybe my opinion would be different if I were on windows.

I’ve had no joy especially preview with Generators.
Incidentally I’m on a macbook pro.

March 20, 2009 at 2:54 pmI did produce a 40 second clip for someone locally, a 3D lights/shadows piece displaying their logo and services as a loop.
The machine only has a consumer level card (ATI 9800 DV), and even with a lot of tweaking, although it looked pretty good, I wasn’t happy. I didn’t have time for the event, I later went back and did it again using the normal advanced 3D renderer after tweaking it a bit. Although it took a little longer to render, I was much happier.
I have wondered about the results using some of the high-priced cards; if anyone even has a glimmer of experience on that, I’d love to hear it. At this time, I think any of my money would be better spent on faster processor, more RAM, or adding another network machine (yes, I actually like network rendering, since I’m in control of all of the machines)

March 20, 2009 at 3:41 pmI have no idea.
I don’t know if it’s on or off or if it’s active or bypassed even when I don’t know if it’s on or off.
The Nvidia 7300 cards I have in my Macs were obsolete when Apple sold them to us. They’ve never been updated or supported by Nvidia. Rat bastards, all.OpenGL is a sick joke on the Macintosh.

April 11, 2009 at 1:05 amFWIW, I leave it off most of the time, too. I only turn it on when working with a large number of 3D layers, and even then only when working on timing of animations (as opposed to the detailed look of a frame).
