Open FCPX pre-10.4.9 project in 10.5.1 – 3rd-party Templates broken. Thoughts?
Let me start by saying, while I’ve been editing on NLE’s since early AVID days & spent years on FCP7, I haven’t done much on FCPX. I’ve got tons of experience troubleshooting tech issues. That being said, I find myself in a tough spot in an FCPX project. My knowledge of FCPX is just below enough to be dangerous. I have no options except to brute force a solution as this show needs to get to the distributor on Jan. 4.
I am trying to open an older FCPX project, last edited successfully on version 10.4.7. The FCPX Project contains a few Pixel Film Presets for lower-thirds and other text cards. I’m working on the same iMac it was originally cut on but it has been updated, it now has FCPX 10.5.1 (on Catalina). I had nothing to do with this project on FCPX. I’m doing finishing work in Resolve/Premiere because it was what I had access to at the time, so now that we are trying to make revisions, I’m stuck. The Pixel Film presets seem to be broken. They are installed in the correct place, but I get a Red screen with a ‘T’ & yellow warning in FCPX, but the clip is not flagged in the clip index with the yellow warning.
Pulling an XML, I can see where the template files should be, and they are still there and permissions are good. I even have the installers for the Pixel Film Templates, so I re-ran them with no change.
When I try to open the ‘.moti’ file for the template in Motion, it gives me the error below:
(‘TemplateStopper::FxPlug Name | Missing Filter’)
A Google search for ‘templatestopper fxplug fcpx’ only gives some pages that don’t help much. And the Pixel Film installer doesn’t have that FxPlug to install anyhow (via ‘Show Package Contents’). There was no ‘/Library/Plug-Ins/FxPlug’ folder on my iMac, so I’m wondering if, due to the changes made in 10.4.9, things are different now. Sadly, I don’t have the login info for Pixel Film to re-download the purchases, so I can’t prove purchase was made.
TL;DR – Was the ‘TemplateStopper::FxPlug’ part of FCPX version 10.4.7 or earlier, and now it has been removed after 10.4.9/10.5.1? If so, any thoughts on how I can get these presets working again? I have a feeling I’m doomed, but maybe there’s hope…thanks.

There’s not much you can do.
Go back to 10.4.9 with Timemachine or from a backup copy.
