    Hi folks…

I’m trying to determine the best method for creating an “open-caption” DVD from an existing Closed-Captioned DVD. Open-Caption, if you’re unfamiliar (as I was), is video with the captions burned-in, as opposed to CC where they can be disabled.

My best bet is to crash digitize the DVD into Avid MC 3.5 with CC turned on, then lay this back to a new DVD. While I have a DVD player connected to my Avid via a Blackmagic converter, I’m (seemingly) unable to turn on Closed-Captioning directly from the player to the Avid.

Original CC’ed DVD was created in DVDSP4, would be great if there was an option in DVDSP/Encore to force CC on…then I wouldn’t have to lose a generation.

Otherwise, Any ideas how to crash record of a DVD into Avid with CC enabled? Thanks.

I do have a laptop with a D-sub connection…maybe I can get that to play it out through a monitor, or even directly into Avid? I dunno…I’m reaching.

You’ll need to pass the output of the DVD player thru an external caption decoder, then into your Avid. You can get a cheap decoder or an expensive one – your choice. Evertz, Link, EEG all have decoders in various flavors. I’d be happy to walk you thru the setup.
