I have some reel to reel 8mm silent films. Remember these? There should be great shots of long gone family and friends on these jewels. I found them in the family basement and I also found the projector. Is there some method to film the film onto dv media or is this transfer best handled by a lab.

You could call a local transfer company. Most of them will have a telecyne system.

I convert quite a bunch of the stuff for a friend’s production company. I have seen the Grand Canyon and kids opening Christmas presents hundreds of times. We use a rather crude, but effective process…project onto a piece of paper and shoot that with a VX 2100. (10 cents a foot plus the DVD, music extra).

My Dad also had a lot of old 16mm footage..we simply set up the old projector and recorded it from the old projector screen via Mini DV cam. I guess not as professional as other methods out there…but it certainly worked really well!
