    I thought this just published Nielsen report on HDTV in the USA would be of interest to compressionists. Since it’s something we need to think about when targeting delivery.

    What I’d really like to know is what portion of that 1/3 has any form of HD playback device whether Blu-ray, AppleTV or any number of other media center type HD boxes.

    They do mention this:
    For example, whereas only 10.6% of
    SD sets were connected to a DVR, 36.0% of all HD sets were connected to DVRs. Similarly, DVR penetration – though greatest among all sets in common areas (26.4%) – was far greater among HD sets (44.6%) than SD sets (17.1%) in common areas.

    and (although the table formating doesn’t hold)

    Interesting. One thing to point out though is the difference between ‘True HD’ and ‘HD capable’ or ‘HD Ready’ and article does not differentiate.

    True HD sets must be able to display a full 1080P (24) picture and have a true resolution of 1920×1080 (or higher), HD capable or HD ready need only to be able to process, and as such down sample the 1080p signal with resolutions far below eg 1024×576.

    Too many buyers are conned by this misleading labeling and the industry need a slap on the wrist for this.

    (I speak as a member of the EU, things maybe different in the US of A)

    If a set supports 720p (1280×720) it’s considered HDTV in USA. Broadcast is either 720p60 or (probably more commonly) 1080i60 (I know 59.94 to be more accurate about both).

    I’m not sure how accurate the reports about people actually viewing HD content. I’d love to see more detail about their methodology (as well as include HD media playback devices).

    Anecdotal but what I see happening locally to me is that most standard tier cable service includes HD channels. If you get cable installed, the installer will give you the HD cable box if they see your HDTV. If you buy the HDTV and already have cable you have to proactively ask to have your box exchanged though (and some people don’t know this).

    Of course most people have no clue about aspect ratio and actually think people look fatter and squatter in HD .
