  • One of two HVX200 units does not work on Pyro card

Posted by Chris Elley on February 25, 2007 at 9:31 pm

We have always owned two HVX200 units. They are set up absolutely identically in menus and switches, including PC Mode=1394DEVICE.

One of the cameras behaves as expected when being placed into PC mode connected to a Mac G5 via a Pyro 1394 card or the Mac’s front on-board 1394 port. The P2 card mounts as a no name volume.

However, the second camera does not mount when it is connected through the Pyro 1394 card. (It’s usually succesful through the Mac’s on-board 1394 port.) We are using the exact same cable and port on the Pyro card, but with different results.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the cause of one camera to work in PC mode through the Pyro card but not the other? Solutions?

(The only notable difference in the two-cameras is that the one in question came off the assembly line first. It was a unit that was shipped very early in respect to most of the HVX200 units out there.)

    Thank you for your thoughts.

Could just be a simple firmware upgrade. Not sure, but I’d check Panasonics website. Reason I bring it up is because Panasonic recently announced the release of it’s 16 Gig P2 Card for May. Any HVX shipped after then will be able to use the card immediately, while any HVX released before then would have to download a firmware upgrade in order to use the card in their camera. Could be a similar issue with your cam if it was one of the first ones shippped.

Go to the Mac’s Disk Utility, see if it is listed then mount it using this app.

The 16GB upgrade is not even available yet, but there is a firmware upgrade. You can find it by going to the HVX product page and going to the resources and you will find the link there.

I would definitely try the Mount Drive suggestion above, but failing that, I would try to discern if the 1394 is working at all. Try connecting the two cameras and see if the one will play into the other. If not then, there is the problem.

    Hope this helps,

    Two things:

It is likely an issue with the Pyro card.

Second, there have been a few issues with the front port of the Mac.

Use the back ports. I just reporting what I’ve read, so I can’t tell you why the problems exists.

I believe the latest system firmware is:

    VERSION: 2.03=00-0.00

I was confused as to whether Jan was stating that firmware for 16 GB cards was available but not the cards.

She later clarified, I believe, by saying that the 16 GB firmware is NOT AVAILABLE.

V.2.03 APPEARS to be the most current firmware avaiable.
