I am using Illustrator CS3. I am trying to stretch only one letter in a word. For instance, for the word “studio”, I just want the tip of the letter “d” to extend upwards while keeping the bottom of the letter the same. AFTER I CONVERT TO OUTLINE, what do I do to make it stretch – please be specific

As Les mentioned, first outline the type. Then, select the Direct Selection tool (the white arrow pointer without the plus sign, or press ‘a’ on your keyboard) from the toolbox and use it to select the upper points of the object that you want to modify. In your case, the top of the ascender on the lower-case ‘d’.
With the points selected, you can move them wherever you want.
Hold down the shift key while moving the points to constrain the movement, if appropriate.
