On screen filter controls
What’s the deal with the change in on-screen control behavior? Prior to 10.0.6, on-screen filter controls were only visible when a clip was selected and the filter selected in the inspector pane. Since the 10.0.6 update, on-screen controls for filters are always visible when you are parked on a clip. There is no global preference setting that I can find to control this. You can only turn this off if the filter itself has an on/off toggle for its own on-screen controls. So, if you apply the new drop shadow effect or use a filter like Yanobox Moods, the controls are ALWAYS visible as an overlay on top of the image when you are parked. At least Moods has a toggle. Seems like a pretty illogical programming change by the ProApps engineers to me. Any thoughts?

I think this is a bug. If a clip is not selected its OSC should not show. I have reported it.

Hmm…. I doubt it. It’s probably wishful thinking that this is anything other than intentional. The reason I say that is because the change is so obvious. There’s no way this would have passed anyone’s QA process if it were in fact a bug. It also mimics open playhead sync in the FCP7 timeline. So I think it was intended, just not well-thought-out. But yes, feedback is good, as maybe this will provide impetus to improve the behavior.

The reason I think it’s a bug is because it is not consistent. It also is not the correct behavior. It is like when focus “sticks” on a clip in the event library even though I have chosen my timeline for playback.

I don’t disagree that it’s not right. If you are right (bug) and I’m wrong (intentional), then it’s time for Apple to hire some better QA engineers.

MIght be a bug, but seems pretty consistent. If you have the filter highlighted in the inspector, it’s on screen controls are shown. Click on something else in the inspector, like transform or even just the word Effects to deselect the filter.

Not all filter’s control will disappear this way. Try it will Apple’s own, new drop shadow filter.

I think I’m noticing that crop and transform tools seem to stay on differently too, but haven’t done much testing. Perhaps there were complaints that the crop or transform had to be reselected too often. My testing was with the drop shadow as I had just finished a few projects with RT drop shadow and has going back and swapping it to the apple drop shadow. The 3rd party drop shadow is quite the problem, because removing it screwed up the scale. So glad apple finally added the drop shadow effect. The perspective thing is nice. Now add a reflection effect please.

We go over this quite often. WE are the QA process. Genius business plan actually: we pay them to beta test their software.
