On location multi-camera kit?
I’m bidding an on location production of a 1/2 local TV show. Yes, ‘local’ being the key budget word. The plan is to shoot on location five shows in one day – at a home, business, or storefront like a kitchen or coffee house. 3 cameras fixed positions, talking head, live-to-tape.
Any suggestions for a simple multi-camera switcher system? We may just record the live segments and assemble the features in post. Ideally, it would be great to have a finished show minus mastering on site. But yeah, I understand the repercussions of the gear to pull that off. We’d need live graphics overlay (moving and static with alpha) Probably could squeeze by with only one source deck.

Records to internal hard drive, a Cg is an add-on option or bring along a laptop to feed graphics made in Photoshop or (ugh) poor-point. The intercom system comes with integral tally lights that run out to your cameras, very handy. I have not had the benefit of tally lights in the field for about 15 years.
This Datavideo system looks like a video toaster/ tricaster with built-in monitors and hands-on button panel. if your budget is more modest, then the Tricaster may be your deal: I know some folks who use theirs in a large public facility and they like it lots. They haev it all set up on a large “taco cart”, so everything is on one rolling platform, just plug inthe cables. The Datavideo looks a wee bit more nimble for the field. Cheaper still, look at Edirol’s lower-cost multiformat switchers
When it first came out, I test-drove the Pinnacle StreamGenie for DV magazine and it was awesome, a world-beater, but two recessions and one dot-com industry collapse ahead of it’s time. Just bad timing, anticipating too early exactly what we’re all doing more of now. It’s form factor though reminds me of another outfit that puts editors and switchers into ruggedized mobile cases. I’m trying to remember the name, something like Video 1 or something like that. If I remember better, I’ll re-post.

It was 1Beyond that I couldn’t remember the name of, but I think they just make portable editing workstations, not live switchers.
