    Hey Everyone,
I’m using a Sony Digital8 DCR-TRV350 hand-me-down which has been great so far. I came across some older tapes my dad recorded on a different camera that are Hi-8. The manual says you can playback Hi-8 and Digital8 on this camera, which is does, but FCP (6.0.5) won’t capture them. They are playing in the log and capture viewer but the strange thing is, there is no timecode on the tapes. Does that make sense? It won’t even let me do a Capture Now without timecode. Can I trick FCP into capturing something that doesn’t have timecode? Or is there another way I can get these Hi-8 tapes onto my computer?
    Thanks!
    Holly

Set the capture up with the machine control preference as “uncontrolled device”, and then hit the manual play button on the hi-8, then “capture now”. Hit the ESC. button when you want to stop. Be sure to add some logging info in t e first couple blocks before you start this. Good luck!

As to the timecode issue, I remember some older Hi8 cameras from Sony did not record timecode where as the Digital 8 cameras usually did. I believe its the difference between Analog Hi8 and Digital 8.

I have a Hi-8 camera, and if you play a regular 8 tape out, the camera will transcode to DV, but you won’t get any timecode.

So you have to capture as a non-controlled device when using a regular 8 tape in a Hi-8 camera.
