old film look in FCP 4.0
Posted by Matt on August 28, 2006 at 7:01 pmCan anyone recommend a way of giving my video an “old film look” those vertical lines, and graininess?
I’m editing in FCP 4.0, interested in doing this without purchasing new software.
Looked in the effects palette but not much jumped out at me.I would be grateful for your two cents!

Nattress filters (www.nattress.com) are great for this and are inexpensive, but not free.
For free, you can use Quicktime Pro. (you have a free license for Quicktime Pro, if you own FCP)
Export the completed project, or individual clip as a Quicktime movie. Open in Quicktime Pro, the select File/Export/Movie to Quicktime Movie.
In the movie settings dialog click “Filter”…under special effects, there will be an option called “film noise”..adjust to taste and save your new movie. Import back into FCP for final output. Be sure to use the same codec you are editing in.

August 28, 2006 at 9:11 pmThere’s also a free “aged film” filter available from CGM.

I haven’t used it myself, but it’s worth checking out.

August 29, 2006 at 1:05 pmMatt, not sure if you have just FCP or the entire suite, but if you have Motion have a look at the free effect from motionsmarts.com – https://www.motionsmarts.com/downloads/agedfilm.html
… I just used it for something and it turned out well.
