  • OK to use 2 different wattage CFL bulbs in multi-bank softbox light?

Is there any reason to NOT mix 2 different wattage CFL bulbs in a multi socketed head – you know the cheap softbox kind that takes 6 bulbs and has 2 power switches so you can turn on 1 bank at a time? My thinking is that rather than have 2 options (half & full), I can have 3 options (3×30 watt, 3×85 watt and both).

The ballast is in the bulb so should not be an issue – right? Especially if bulbs are from same manufacture and have same temp & CRI?

    Am I missing something?

Sample of multi socket head.. but there are dozens of them out there:

Can’t really think why there would be a problem.

Just because I’m a bit obsessive about lighting, I’d rig it that way and do a simple test.

Whatever camera you’re using, lock it to all manual settings. Then shoot a test and switch the light through all it’s settings.

    Watch the result.

If you don’t get significant shifts in anything other than brightness, you’re good to go.

Seems like a missed advertising opportunity for just about EVERY single multi-bank seller out there. “Not 1, not 2, but 3 possible settings”….

    Well, kinda.

The problem is that the industry years ago licked the problem of dimming fluorescent sources. So 3 possible settings is all well and good, but not nearly as useful as an infinitely variable dimmer.

Still, nothing wrong with these at all. Just understand that at some point these “budget” solutions give way to spending money for the kind of gear that gives you more performance – obviously at a higher price.

    FWIW.
